Midland Reefs Newsletter May 08.
OK, let’s try this again! The Midland Reefs online shop is back up and running and looking better than ever – honest! After my last announcement that the site was back up we suffered a slight glitch that meant it was down again the very next day. As a result of this we’ve taken the opportunity to update and improve the entire site. It’s still a work in progress but it is up and running now, better than ever before. At long last the new fully illustrated edition of the Book of Coral Propagation by Anthony Calfo has arrived! We apologise for the delay if you’d already placed an order for this book, all outstanding orders have been now been posted out. It’s a monster of a book, now in hardback with 400 pages and around 1000 full colour photos. RRP £34.95 (inc free P&P). Phone for information about signed copies. In addition to this we’ve also brought in a limited quantity of the first 5 issues of Anthony’s own magazine, C The Journal. This is a quarterly magazine (4 issues per year). This is not currently available in the shops. Single issue cost £6.75, one year’s subscription £26.00 (a considerable saving over the International subscription rate of $75 – around £37/£38) Reef Ramblings has now got it’s own stand alone site, www.reeframblings.co.uk The site contains a mix of both reef aquarium information and news relating to the natural environment. It’s slowly being expanded to increase product information, allowing you to make an informed choice about the equipment you buy from Midland Reefs, e.g. see the article on the new Wavemaker from Hydor. See my latest article about the formation of a new European based Sustainable Aquarium Industry Association. With our Optimal Nutrition range, comprising of DT’s live phyto, oyster eggs, PE Mysis, Cyclop-Eeze FreezerBar, Dainichi, and our aquaculture products, I’m confident in saying that Midland Reefs has one of, if not, the best, nutritional ranges available for the reef aquarium hobby. Professional quality LED lighting made in the UK! The new Green Skies GS elite was debuted at the UK trade show in September 2007. Now running in public aquaria in Europe and the UK. These lights are now slowly becoming available to hobbyists, go to http://www.green-skies.com for more information. Remember, all items for sale in the shop are priced at recommended retail price (RRP) including free postage and packing! Other web-based sites may sometimes offer lower prices but then charge extra for delivery. Don’t forget about the International Year of the Reef 2008; go to http://www.iyor.org/ to see some of Tim’s articles in support. If you’d like to get involved please get in contact with Tim, support materials are available for education etc. To order, either go to the website or phone our sales order line: 01832 737523 For more info on these or any other of our products, call Tim on: 01543 684621
Newsletter: October 2009.
Newsletter: October 2009. Discover the new Coral magazine! Coral 6.4, Sea Squirts is here, the fourth issue of the new Coral magazine. Hailed by critics as "the world's best reefkeeping magazine," CORAL is written by leading aquarium experts and marine biologists, lavishly illustrated with breathtaking images, and filled with inspiration for beginning to expert aquarists. As promised we're now receiving the relaunched Coral magazine regularly and on time, we are sending out a new issue every month up until the end of the year, at which time the schedule will revert to being bi-monthly with the magazine coming out in the UK within a week or two of its US publication date. Product News. Coming soon ... Reef Scientific Carbon. Reef Scientific Carbon will shortly be available. This compliments the existing Reef Scientific Phosphate Remover being a high quality, dust free, phosphate free product. It's a small diameter (0.9 mm) pelletised carbon ideally suited to being fluidised, given its characteristics. The new Reef Scientific Ozoniser has beeen well received. This is a high quality product at a cost effective price, plus it's made in the UK!! This UK made, high specification unit, uses cold plate discharge technology. The output is adjustable between 0 and 100 mg; and. because of the greater efficiency over corona discharge ozonisers, this is comparable in output to that of a 200mg Sanders unit when used without an expensive air dryer. The Reef Scientific Ozoniser features a built in 365 day digital timer  so that it can be run for timed periods over the course of the day as an alternative to the more expensive, and often inaccurate, method of using a redox controller. The unit is splash resistant to IP55 This is very versatile product, it can be run on mains power all over the world as it will operate from 85 – 260 volts AC 50 – 60 Hz. As well as units with UK plugs we have units with  European plugs available. US and other countries will follow in due course. Unlike cheaper quality units adapted to different mains supplies there's no transformer to go fail. Oh, and did I mention it's made in the UK? Other News. Midland Reefs is now working in partnership with a new marine aquarium forum, the Salty Box: www.thesaltybox.com where Tim is moderator on one of the forums covering breeding and aquaculture, if you're interested come along and join in. We are now offering discount cards to members of this forum, these enable members to get a discount off of selected Midland Reefs products at their local fish shop. New on Reef Ramblings. Reef Ramblings contains a mix of both reef aquarium information and news relating to the natural environment. It’s slowly being expanded to increase product information, allowing you to make an informed choice about the equipment you buy from Midland Reefs. Recent articles published on www.reeframblings.co.uk include: Overview of the Hydor Performer Skimmer Range. Reef Ramblings – Summer 2009 Saia – Acclimation and Quarantine procedures Product News. Don't forget about ReefresH2O Cellpore bio-filtration material. The extremely high surface area of ReefresH2O is 10-100 times that of any other biofilter media, analogous to the structure of live rock, it allows aerobic and anaerobic bacteria to grow in and around the material. The interconnected pores, from sub-micron size to 500 microns, allows water to flow freely through the material, delivering water and nutrients to the biofilms. Available in plates, spheres, and frag plugs. We recommend the 9” x 4” x 4” block as being a solution to nitrate problems in the reef aquarium. Our new live food, Reef Scientific, Optimal Nutrition Live Zooplankton, is proving very popular. A mix of of Brachionus plicatilis (Rotifers) and Tigriopsis Japonicus (Copepods), intended as starter culture for reef aquarium use, it can be cultured outside of the aquarium or used to seed a refugium. It gives you a wide range of live particle sizes, from c10 – 2500 µm. Grown and enriched with DT's phytoplankton for an optimal nutritional profile, this product is a source of Carotenoids, Sterols, Omega-3’s & Omega-6’s, Essential Amino Acids and Proteins. A live product containing no artificial preservatives or additives. For those using Poly Filters, it’s worth taking a look at PURA pads, these are about twice the area of a regular Poly Filter for around the same price. Independently tested against others on the market, the results indicate that the PURA pad out competes the others both in quantity of pollutant removed and the speed of removal. Another one for the Cost Conscious Reefkeeper! Also from Pura is NitrateLock, a selective ion exchange resin for Nitrate removal. NitrateLock rapidly removes and maintains extremely low to non-measurable levels of nitrates in fresh and salt-water aquariums. Long lasting, this can be safely regenerated 100's of times with the use of a saturated salt solution. However you choose to do it, whether with ReefresH2O or with NitrateLock, Midland Reefs has the solution to all your nitrate problems!!! With DT’s live Phyto, oyster eggs, DT’s live Copepods, PE Mysis, Cyclop-Eeze FreezerBar, and Reef Scientific Live Zooplankton, I’m confident in saying that Midland Reefs has one of, if not, the best, nutritional ranges available for the reef aquarium hobby. All free from artificial preservatives and additives!! Remember, all items for sale in the shop are priced at recommended retail price (RRP) including free postage and packing! Other web-based sites may sometimes offer lower prices but then charge extra for delivery. For more info on these, or any other of our products, please call 01543 685599. Midland Reefs Ltd.
