In order to offer you a better service we have increased the breadth of the Midland Reefs> product range by teaming up with German manufacturer JBL. We will be adding a broad selection of JBL products to the range over the coming weeks and months.

JBL was founded more than 50 years ago and supplies over 65 countries worldwide with one of the largest range of aquatic products in the world, listing 1000 + items.

JBL's philosophy is to sell its products exclusively through specialist stores to ensure that consumers receive skilled advice about JBL products at the point of purchase. Products are developed according to the guiding principle that they should be as simple as possible to use, so that aquarium and pond keepers find their hobby becoming simpler rather than more complicated. A further testimony to JBL's dedication to the hobby is a preference to employ people who are active aquarists and pond keepers in their free time.

Research is central to JBL, hence the slogan, "Vorsprung durch Forschung" – "Ahead through research", and is reflected in the size of the budget dedicated to research. The research centre in Neuhofen has a large collection of aquariums and ponds where a team of biologists test and develop new JBL products and carry out fundamental research. Indeed, this is taken further by working with leading European scientific institutions such as the Leibniz Institute for Marine Science. In addition to the research carried out in Germany, since 2001 JBL has been funding research expeditions to the countries around the world, where the ornamental fish kept by aquarists originate, in order to learn more abut the natural habitats. Insights gained from field research are applied to improve the product range, wherever possible. For example, many JBL water tests use a comparator system taking into account the natural colour of water (which is generally not clear) enabling accurate test results whatever the conditions.

As one of the largest industry supporters of SAIA (the Sustainable Aquarium Industry Association), environmental awareness is important to JBL; particular care is applied to the production of fish food with not a single fish being caught directly for fish food! JBL exclusively uses fish meat left over from the production of fish fillets for human consumption, avoiding the use of phosphate-containing fishmeal whilst still using high-grade, pure fish protein.

Other Products

MarinePure bio-filtration media, previously ReefresH2O, has an extremely high surface area 10-100 times that of any other bio filter media, analogous to the structure of live rock, it allows aerobic and anaerobic bacteria to grow in and around the material. Interconnected pores, from sub-micron size to 500 microns, allow water to flow freely through the material, delivering water and nutrients to the bio films. Use DrTim's One and Only to bring your MarinePure to life!

The Reef Scientific Media Range (RS Carbon, Phosphate Remover and Reactor Mix), along with the UK made Reef Scientific Ozoniser (featuring a built in 365 day digital timer) have all been favourably reviewed on Reef Builders, the influential US blog, since we exhibited at Interzoo. RS Carbon and RS Phosphate Remover are both virtually dust-free products, reducing the need for rinsing before use and the consequential loss of media to waste. The small diameter of these pelletised media gives a high surface area and is well suited to fluidisation. RS Reactor Mix is a mixed media comprising RS Carbon and RS Phosphate Remover, ideal for use in nano reefs where there may not be enough room to accommodate the media separately.

Reef Scientific Optimal Nutrition Live Zooplankton, a mix of Brachionus Plicatilis (Rotifers) and Tigriopus Japonicus (Copepods), is intended as a starter culture for reef aquarium use; culture it outside of the aquarium as a live feed. It gives you a wide range of live particle sizes, from c10 – 2500 μm. Grown and enriched with DT's Phytoplankton for an optimal nutritional profile, this product is a source of Carotenoids, Sterols, Omega-3's & Omega-6's, Essential Amino Acids and Proteins.

PÜRA pads are about twice the area of a regular Poly Filter for around the same price. Independently tested against others on the market, the results indicate that the PÜRA pad out competes the others both in quantity of pollutant removed and the speed of removal. Also from PÜRA is NitrateLock, a selective ion exchange resin that rapidly removes and maintains extremely low to non-measurable levels of nitrates in fresh and saltwater aquariums. Long lasting, it can be safely regenerated 100's of times with a brine solution.

However you choose to do it, whether with DrTim's, MarinePure, or with NitrateLock,
Midland Reefs has the solution to all your filtration problems!

With DT's live Phyto, oyster eggs and live Copepods, PE Mysis, Cyclop-Eeze FreezerBar, Reef Scientific Live Zooplankton, and Reef Scientific Frozen Calanoid Copepods (The highest quality frozen natural marine zooplankton available anywhere! Suitable for all saltwater and freshwater fish, corals, and crustaceans), Midland Reefs has the best nutritional range available for the reef aquarium hobby - all free from artificial preservatives and additives!
